The rushing water clears away some useless thoughts, replacing “schedule” with “freshet” and “record digitization” with “apricity.”
The power of the river and of the sun cannot be measured in flow rates or irradiance. No, that power can only be measured in units of life force: How many birds come to the riparian woods? How high are the sycamore saplings today? Which species of snakes lie on the smooth blue boulders at the water’s edge?
We are no different than the river or sun. We cannot be measured by hours worked or targets met. No, we can only be measured in units of life force: How much flourishing does our own flourishing support? How much love do our hearts give and receive? What other beings do we readily share this wondrous world with?
